If you're considering studying CIMA, you've probably come across the Finance Leadership Programme (FLP). Since its launch, FLP has become one of the most popular routes to achieving the globally recognised Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation, offering a more flexible way to study without changing the qualification itself.

One of the biggest misconceptions about FLP is that it's a different qualification to the traditional CIMA Professional Qualification (PQ). It isn't.

The syllabus, learning outcomes, Case Study exams and CGMA designation are exactly the same. The difference lies in how you progress through the qualification.

Instead of sitting Objective Tests after every subject, FLP replaces these with competency assessments completed as you work through the syllabus. As a result, you'll write a maximum of three exams on your journey to becoming a CGMA: the Operational, Management and Strategic Case Study Exams.

In this guide, we'll explain exactly how CIMA FLP works, what's included in the subscription, why more students are choosing FLP, when the best time is to start, and why thousands of South African students have chosen to study with IBTC.

What is CIMA's Finance Leadership Programme (FLP)?

The Finance Leadership Programme is CIMA's flexible, subscription-based route to completing the CGMA Professional Qualification.

Rather than preparing for and writing Objective Tests after every subject, you'll complete interactive learning activities and competency assessments throughout each level. Once you've demonstrated the required competencies, you'll progress to the Case Study Exam for that level.

This allows you to focus more on developing practical workplace skills while still meeting the same academic standards required of every CIMA student.

Whether you study through FLP or the traditional Professional Qualification, you'll earn exactly the same globally recognised CGMA designation once you've completed the qualification.

How Does CIMA FLP Work?

Your learning journey follows the same structure as the traditional qualification.

Students who do not qualify for exemptions begin at the Foundation Level before progressing through the three professional levels.

Foundation Level

Operational Level Competencies

Operational Case Study Exam

Management Level Competencies

Management Case Study Exam

Strategic Level Competencies

Strategic Case Study Exam

CGMA Designation

If you qualify for exemptions through your degree or previous studies, you'll begin at the appropriate level and only complete the remaining competencies and Case Study Exams.

Say Goodbye to Objective Tests

For many students, this is the biggest advantage of FLP.

Traditionally, students write an Objective Test after every subject before progressing to the Case Study Exams. Depending on where you begin your studies, this can mean writing up to 16 Objective Tests before qualifying.

With FLP, those Objective Tests have been replaced by competency assessments completed as you work through the syllabus. Rather than stopping to prepare for and write an exam after every subject, you'll demonstrate your understanding through assessments integrated into the learning platform before progressing to the next competency.

The only formal exams you'll write are the three Case Study Exams:

  • Operational Case Study
  • Management Case Study
  • Strategic Case Study

That's a maximum of three exams instead of up to 16 exams.

The qualification, syllabus, learning outcomes and CGMA designation remain exactly the same. The difference is simply how you study. For many students, this creates a smoother, more practical learning experience that better fits around work and personal commitments.

Another big advantage of FLP is that your studies don't have to come to a standstill while you wait for your Case Study Exam results.

On the traditional CIMA Professional Qualification route, students generally wait for their Case Study result before progressing to the next level. This means valuable study time can be lost between sitting an exam and receiving the outcome.

With FLP, you can continue your learning while you wait. After sitting your Case Study Exam, you can begin working through the competencies for the next level instead of putting your studies on hold.

If you pass your Case Study Exam, you'll already have made a head start on the next level, helping you maintain your momentum and potentially complete the qualification sooner.

When is the Best Time to Start FLP?

Although you can start FLP throughout the year, some start dates are better than others.

The ideal months to begin your subscription are:

  • March
  • June
  • September
  • December

These intakes take place immediately after each Case Study Exam sitting, giving you the maximum amount of time to complete your competencies before preparing for the next Case Study Exam.

Choosing the right intake can also maximise the number of Case Study Exam opportunities available during your annual subscription. This is particularly valuable if your goal is to complete multiple levels within one subscription or if you want the flexibility of having a resit opportunity.

At IBTC, helping students choose the right intake is one of the first conversations we have. A well-planned start date can save both time and money.

FLP vs the Traditional CIMA Professional Qualification

Both FLP and the traditional Professional Qualification result in the same globally-recognised CGMA designation. Although the qualification you earn is identical, the way you study is different.

Finance Leadership Programme (FLP) Traditional Professional Qualification (PQ)
Competency Assessments throughout each level   Objective Test exams after each subject
Maximum of 3 Case study exams   Up to 13 Objective Test exams plus 3 Case Study exams
One all inclusive annual subscription    Pay seperately for exams and learning materials per subject
Structured around integrated compentencies   Structured around individual subjects
Results in the same CGMA designation     Results in the same CGMA designation

FLP provides a more flexible and streamlined learning experience without changing the qualification or its standards.

What's Included in an FLP Subscription?

One of FLP's biggest advantages is its simplicity.

Your annual subscription includes:

  • CIMA registration fees
  • Access to the complete FLP learning platform
  • Learning materials for every subject
  • Competency assessments
  • Case Study Exam preparation
  • Two Case Study Exam tokens per level

Instead of paying separately for multiple exams and study resources, almost everything is included in one annual subscription.

Why More Students Are Choosing FLP?

The Finance Leadership Programme has transformed the way students study towards the CGMA designation.

Instead of preparing for numerous Objective Tests throughout the qualification, students can focus on developing practical knowledge through competency-based learning before demonstrating that knowledge in the three Case Study Exams.

Combined with a flexible online learning platform, predictable annual subscription and self-paced learning, FLP has become the preferred study route for thousands of aspiring management accountants around the world.

Whether you're beginning at Foundation Level or joining with exemptions, FLP offers a modern approach to achieving exactly the same internationally recognised qualification.

How Long Does CIMA FLP Take?

There isn't a single answer.

The time it takes depends on:

  • Your academic exemptions
  • The level at which you start
  • How much time you dedicate to studying
  • How quickly you complete the competency assessments
  • Your readiness for each Case Study Exam

Another advantage of FLP is that you can begin working on the competencies for the next level while waiting for your Case Study Exam results. Unlike the traditional route, where students typically wait for their results before progressing, FLP allows you to maintain your study momentum and make better use of the time between exam sittings.

Because FLP is self-paced, every student's journey is different. Some students complete multiple levels within a year, while others choose to study at a slower pace alongside full-time work.
