When it comes to completing CIMA's professional qualification, you’ve got two paths to choose from:

  • The Traditional Route
  • The Finance Leadership Programme (FLP) Route

Both routes lead to the same qualification. They cover the same syllabus, teach the same competencies, and result in the same globally recognised CGMA designation.

So how do you decide which one’s right for you?

We’ve broken down the key differences, including structure, cost, and flexibility so you can make an informed choice before you begin.

The Core Difference: How You Study

The biggest difference between FLP and CIMA's traditional route lies in how the content is delivered and how you’re assessed.

CIMA's Traditional Route

This is the classic way to complete CIMA's professional qualificaiton. It's structured around individual exams for each subject:

  • You’ll complete 12 exams (if starting from Operational level)
  • 9 Objective Tests (E, P & F subjects)
  • 3 Case Study Exams
  • If you start at the Certificate Level, there are 4 extra Objective Tests before Operational
  • You study subject-by-subject using textbooks
  • You must pass all 3 subjects at a level before moving on to the Case Study exam

Finance Leadership Programme (FLP) Route

FLP is CIMA’s modern, online-first option:

  • No separate exams for each subject
  • Instead, you complete continuous competency assessments and quizzes as you progress through the modules
  • You still sit the 3 Case Study exams (one per level)
  • All study material, practice questions, and support are hosted on one digital platform
  • No additional textbooks or exam booking admin, everything is included with your subscription

Which Route Fits You Best?

Here’s a breakdown of the pros of each route so you can see which one best matches your life, learning style, and budget.

FLP Route – Why Students Love It

  • Faster: You can progress through the qualification in under two years
  • Cheaper overall: Although the upfront cost is higher, the all-in subscription often works out to be more affordable
  • All-in-one subscription: Study material, assessments, Case Study exam fee (even a rewrite) -  it’s all covered
  • Built-in motivation: The subscription model helps keep momentum going
  • Convenient: Study anytime, anywhere, from one online platform

Traditional Route - Why It Still Works for Many

  • More structured: Completing a test per subject helps reinforce content through repetition and formal exams
  • Flexible pacing: Study at your own speed
  • Physical learning: Prefer printed textbooks and offline study? PQ supports that
  • Lower monthly cost: Pay per subject as you go, which may be easier to manage upfront
