"When is the best time of year to start CIMA’s Finance Leadership Programme (FLP)?"
It’s one of the most common questions we get from students planning their CIMA journey. While enrolment is open year-round, the timing of your start date can make a big difference to how far you get on your subscription.
Here’s why it matters, and how to choose a smart starting point.
What are the ideal start dates?
The best months to start your FLP subscription are February, May, August, and November. Spot the pattern? These are the months in which the CIMA Case Study Exams are held.
But why does that matter?
Why exam months should guide your start date
Starting your subscription in one of these key months gives you the best possible runway to plan and prepare. Case Study Exams happen every three months, so enrolling at the right time ensures you have sufficient time to work through the syllabus and aim for the next sitting.
This timing also gives you up to four chances to sit your Case Study exams within a standard 12-month subscription. That’s especially important if you need to retake an exam, as you won’t have to wait long before trying again.
Even if you're on a longer subscription, aligning with these dates helps you structure your studies more strategically and avoid long gaps between exam opportunities.
Are there exceptions?
Yes, not everyone follows the same path. If you only need to complete one level, or if you’ve received exemptions, your timeline may look different. That’s where speaking to a tuition provider like us helps. We’ll guide you based on your specific background and goals.
