If you’re planning to study CIMA, you may not need to start from the very beginning. Depending on your background, you could skip certain exams and begin at a higher level, saving you time and money.
CIMA exemptions are granted in three main ways:
Academic Qualifications
If you’ve studied accounting, finance, economics, or business at a tertiary level, CIMA may exempt you from certain subjects, especially at the Certificate and Operational levels.
Common examples:
Qualification | Typical Entry Point |
Diploma in Accounting Science | Operational Level |
BCom Accounting (UNISA, UJ, WITS) | Management Level |
Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting Sciences | Management Level |
BCom Honours Financial Management | Management Level Case Study |
Your exemptions are based on the institution you studied at, and qualifications must not be older than 7+ years.
Professional Qualifications and Memberships
If you are a current member in good standing with a recognised professional body, CIMA may award exemptions based on your membership in conjunction with your academic qualification.
Examples include:
Professional Body | Possible Exemptions |
ACCA | Up to Management Level |
AAT | Start at Operational Level |
ICB (NQF 6 Diploma) | Start at Operational Level |
SAIPA | Management Level |
SAICA (CA(SA)) | Strategic Case Study |
You’ll need to provide proof of membership and completed qualifications.
Relevant Work Experience (Elite Pathway)
If you’ve worked in finance or accounting for several years but don’t hold a formal qualification, you may still qualify for advanced entry based on your experience.
Typical candidates:
- Finance Managers
- Analysts
- Commercial Accountants
- Senior bookkeepers with 8–10+ years’ experience
CIMA will assess your CV and determine your eligibility.
